You matter. (Week 14)

Dear Teacher,

You matter.

When you're tired, your kids notice. When you're not at your best, your kids can tell. When you change your hair, wear a new outfit, or you're sick, they comment on it. Why do you think that is? Because you matter. Your kids care about you.

They may never say it out loud. Sometimes they might not act like it. You may never know the impact that you have on them. But you matter.

Don't let this go to waste.

When your student tells you that they were in a car accident but don't know how to fill out the paperwork, step away from your computer and help them.

When your student breaks down because they were on track to break a school record in track but now they are out for the season due to an injury, put down your lesson plan and comfort them.

When your student comes to you after a hard breakup feeling like they will never get through it, set aside your lunch and have a heart to heart with them.

Our students need us. Sometimes we are the only person our student has to look up to. Sometimes our students don't have someone at home telling them that they matter. Sometimes our students are facing so much more than we could ever know.

You matter.

They may have never told you this in your education courses. You may never be evaluated on it. It definitely was not in your job description. But it is crucial.

Our students need teachers but they also need coaches, role models, nurses, mentors, artists, heroes, and sometimes, just someone to care.

Dear Teacher, you matter.
